What Is a Dental Emergency?

Because there are many kinds of dental emergencies, it can be difficult to differentiate between those requiring immediate care and those less urgent. Regardless of your situation, if you're experiencing dental pain, it's unlikely to go away on its own, so we recommend contacting our office if you're unsure if you need urgent dental care. Some common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe toothache: Persistent tooth pain is often the result of significant decay or an infection. Without treatment, you risk further complications and potentially losing the tooth.
  • Cracked or broken tooth: Although this may not cause immediate pain, a compromised tooth is susceptible to further decay and damage.
  • Lost tooth: An accident or sudden impact can lead to a dislodged tooth, accompanied by significant bleeding and pain. With immediate treatment, we can potentially save the tooth.
  • Broken or lost restoration: When a crown, filling, or other restoration becomes damaged or dislodged, this can compromise the integrity of your remaining tooth structure. Prompt care can prevent decay or further damage.

What to Expect From Our Emergency Dental Care

When you contact our office, we'll first work to determine if you need urgent dental care. We offer same-day appointments for all patients whenever possible and are committed to supporting you however we can during business hours. If you're an existing patient and a dental emergency strikes outside of typical office hours, you can rest assured that you'll have 24-hour access to call our office. Our skilled dentist will give you a call back as soon as possible to discuss your needs and figure out how soon you require care.

Once you arrive at our office for your emergency dental appointment, we will thoroughly evaluate your situation. Our priorities are to relieve pain, determine the root cause of your issue, and get you the appropriate treatment. It's important to us that you have a healthy and pain-free smile, so no matter your emergency, we try to help you as soon as possible. Depending on your situation, we may be able to complete treatment, such as a new filling, on the same day. Otherwise, we will do our best to maximize your comfort and schedule another appointment as soon as possible.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

A dental emergency can strike at any time, so it's important to know what to do before it happens. Because every patient's situation is unique, and no two emergencies are the same, we also recommend contacting our office as soon as possible for further instructions. While waiting for our dentist to get back to you, here are some temporary measures you can take for these common emergencies:

  • Toothache: For temporary relief from a toothache, an over-the-counter painkiller, topical gel, or cold compress can be effective. Carefully follow the directions for painkillers and topical gels and apply cold compresses externally near the affected area to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Cracked or Broken Tooth: If there are any sharp edges, you can use a small amount of dental wax to protect the soft tissue in the mouth. Use a warm saltwater rinse to help remove bacteria from the site, and avoid chewing with the affected tooth to prevent further damage.
  • Lost Tooth or Restoration: If the tooth or restoration is still intact, gently rinse it with warm water and attempt to fit it back into place. You can temporarily secure a lost restoration with a dental adhesive. Be careful to handle a lost tooth by the crown and not the roots. If you cannot reinsert your tooth or it is in multiple pieces, store it in a container with salt water, saliva, or milk to keep it moist until your appointment. Bring any broken pieces of a restoration with you.
  • Bleeding: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help remove bacteria. Use a clean, dry cotton ball or piece of gauze to apply gentle and constant pressure, and change it regularly until the bleeding stops.
